Mandatory registration of cell phone numbers in Mexico begins January 9, 2026.
January 9, 2025
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) approved the Guidelines for the identification of mobile telephone lines, which comes into force on January 9, 2026.
All cellular telephone numbers (prepaid and postpaid) must be identified with a natural person or business as of this date. As explained by authorities, the goal is to eliminate anonymity and help prevent crime.
A certified/digital CURP (downloadable at gob.mx/curp) and a valid, official identification (INE, passport, or biometric CURP) are required to register the telephone number.
Registration can be done digitally or in person at the telephone provider´s customer service centers. Each cell phone service provider must advise customers of the registration process and provide a link to carry out the registration.
Registration must be done between January 9 and June 29, 2026.
The authorities have advised that if registration does not happen before this deadline, the cell phone number may be suspended.
