«Porcelaine de Limoges»: the first craft and industrial

geographical indication recognized by the EU

The name «Porcelaine de Limoges» has just become the first geographical indication for craft and industrial products (CIGI) recognized throughout the European Union.

Beyond the symbolic significance, the decision is important in that it legally recognizes the link between products, their geographical origin, and the traditional know-how developed over more than two centuries in the Haute-Vienne region.

From this moment on, the name will be protected not only in France but across all 27 member states, ensuring that only products made entirely in the region, as well as the modeling and decoration techniques unique to Limoges, may bear this name.

The new GI regime extends protection that had already been established in other sectors, such as wine and food, to non-agricultural products, thus allowing protection for goods whose quality or reputation depends on their origin.

The impact is twofold: first, it gives producers stronger tools to protect against imitation, misuse, or counterfeiting; second, it offers consumers greater transparency regarding the authenticity and origin of the products.

This is the first of what are expected to be many CIGIs, given the significant interest in the new protection system of the EUIPO. In just a few months since coming into force, 74 applications have already been filed for sectors as diverse as ceramics, textiles, and cutlery.

This system will help strengthen the European model of protection of geographical indications by providing a specific legal framework for the protection and promotion of craft and industrial products on the market.
