Integration of “Llave MX” into the IMPI’s Electronic Services
October 14, 2026
On September 4, 2026, the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) published an Agreement amending the guidelines applicable to the electronic services of the IMPI with the purpose of enabling ¨Llave MX¨ as an official mechanism for digital authentication and identification to manage procedures before the Institute. The amendment updates definitions, incorporates the use of a Llave MX account as an option for registration, and updates the terms of service that users must accept upon validating their account.
The relevant changes in the Agreement are:
- The definition of “Regulations” is amended to refer to the new Regulations of the Federal Law for the Protection of Industrial Property.
- The definition for “Llave MX” is added as a mechanism for authentication and identification for digital services, which is associated with a CURP (Unique Population Registration Number).
- Applicants are now permitted to access IMPI’s electronic services using their Llave MX account.
- The account validation process has been updated to allow registration with Llave MX.
- The terms of service that users must agree to have been modified to include statements acknowledging that their CURP or Llave MX account are authentic and must accept responsibility for the use of their password and/or account.
- A clause is added stating that the IMPI may require physical documentation to be submitted in order to authenticate the electronically submitted documents.
The Agreement goes into force upon its publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation.
This amendment bolsters the use of government digital identity mechanisms to access the IMPI’s electronic procedures, which helps simplify access to online services for individuals and legal entities. Nonetheless, users retain sole responsibility for the use of their credentials or Llave MX account, and the IMPI may still require physical documentation. As such, users are advised to maintain complete records and documentary evidence for processes filed electronically.
