Four New Geographical Indications and a New Appellation of Origin in Mexico

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property has recently declared the protection of four new geographical indications and one appellation of origin. 

The declarations of protection for the geographical indicationsTraje de Chinelo originario del Estado de Morelos and Cuera Tamaulipeca were published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on February 23, 2026. The declarations of protection for the geographical indications Guava de Calvillo and Pulque de Tlaxcala were published on February 24, 2026. Finally, the declaration of protection for the appellation of origin Café Nayarit was published in the Gazette on March 3, 2026. 

  • Chinelo Garments from the State of Morelos 

The Protected Geographical Indication was declared as Traje de Chinelo originario del Estado de Morelosidentifying an artisanal product which corresponds to colorful traditional clothing that consistof a long dress, a tallfinely decorated hat with beads, sequins, embroideryfibers and feathers, as well as neck scarves, gloves, ankle boots and a mask. The area of protection is the municipalities of Tlayacapan, Tepoztlán, and Yautepec, all located in the State of Morelos, Mexico. 

  • Tamaulipas Leather 

The Protected Geographical Indication was declared as Cuera Tamaulipecaidentifying an artisanal product which corresponds to a garment made with various types of leather. The municipalities of Tula and Victoria, located in the State of Tamaulipas, Mexico, were delimited as the protected geographical area. 

  • Calvillo Guava 

The Protected Geographical Indication was declared as Guava de Calvilloidentifying an agricultural product of the variety traditionally known as media china. The municipality of Calvillo, located in the State of Aguascalientes, Mexico, was delimited as the protected geographical area. 

  • Pulque of Tlaxcala 

The Protected Geographical Indication was declared as Pulque de Tlaxcala in the publication, identifying an alcoholic beverage of pre-Hispanic origin which is made by fermenting the mucilage from the heart of the maguey plant, popularly known as aguamiel. The aguamiel extracted from the pulquero maguey, Agave salmiana, is fermented to produce the pulque. The pulque produced in Tlaxcala is characterized by a consistency of a subtly higher viscosity, mainly attributed to the synthesis of dextrans by strains of Leuconostoc spp. bacteria during fermentation, which gives it a dense body upon shaking the beverage. The municipalities of Atltzayanca; Apizaco; Atlangatepec; Calpulalpan; Chiautempan; Contla de Juan Cuamatzi; Españita; Huamantla; Hueyotlipan; Ixtacuixtla de Mariano Matamoros; Muñoz de Domingo Arenas; Nanacamilpa de Mariano Arista; Panotla; San José Teacalco; Sanctórum de Lázaro Cárdenas; Teolocholco; Terrenate; Tetla de la Solidaridad; Tlaxcala; Tlaxco; Tocatlan; Tzompantepec; Xaloztoc; Xaltocan; and Yauhquemehcan, all in the State of Tlaxcala, are delimited as the protected.

  • Nayarit Coffee  

The Protected Appellation of Origin was declared as Café Nayarit for an agri-food product consisting of coffee, with arabica coffee being the main species produced in the geographical area identified in the declaration. The protected geographical area was delimited to the municipalities of Compostela, Ruiz, San Blas, and Xalisco, in the State of Nayarit, Mexico.
