
New declarations of protection of Mexican geographical

The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property has recently published new declarations of protection of geographical indications. The declarations of geographical indications for “Cecina de Yecapixtla, Orgullo de Morelos“ and “Tuna Roja Vigor de San Sebastián Villanueca, Municipio de Acatzingo, Puebla“ were published on January 20. The declaration of the geographical indication “Muñeca Lele de Santiago Mexquitlán,“ meanwhile, was published on January 27, 2026, and the declaration of protection of the geographical indication “Muñeca Dönxu de San Ildefonso Tultepec“ was published on January 28, 2026. These indications protect foods and craftworks that have met the requirements set forth by the Federal Law for the Protection of Industrial Property in order to grant the corresponding declarations of protection.
- Cecina de Yecapixtla, Orgullo de Morelos
This Protected Geographical Indication identifies a meat product made mainly from high-quality beef, specifically lean cuts from the posterior or leg of the cattle, also known as ¨black flesh.¨ It is characterized by its intense red color and soft, thin texture, as well as its salty flavor and distinctive aroma, which is the result of an artisanal process passed down from generation to generation.
The product protected by the Protected Geographical Indication is subject to the provisions of the ¨Rules of Use establishing the characteristics and specifications that the product´Cecina de Yecapixtla, Orgullo de Morelos´ must meet,¨ which was filed with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property, along with other official regulations and required standards.
The protected geographical area is limited to the municipality of Yecapixtla, which is located in the state of Morelos.
- Tuna Rojo Vigor de San Sebastián Villanueva, Municipio de Acatzingo, Puebla
This Protected Geographical Indication identifies a medium to large fruit with an average length of 5.7 to 8.5 cm and an elliptical to oval shape. Its surface is smooth without thorns, which facilitates postharvest handling. The stem is short and the blossom end is wide and slightly sunken, which helps resist damage during transportation and handling. The skin has a dark red color in the middle section, with yellowish-green hues at the ends, giving it a distinctive visual appeal. The flesh is bright red with a firm texture, a lot of juice and a small amount of mucilage, which makes it ideal for both fresh consumption and industrial processing.

The protected geographical area is limited to the town of San Sebastián Villanueva, a municipality of Acatzingo, in the state of Puebla.
- Muñeca Lele de Santiago Mexquitlán
This Protected Geographical Indication identifies a craftwork consisting of a cloth doll characterized by a circular head shape (why it´s also known as a “ball doll”), with two hair braids, a headdress made of ribbons, and a dress made from various fabrics. The declaration of protection recognizes two types of LELE doll: a traditional one and one wearing the traditional costume of Santiago Mexquititlán, which is a traditional blouse made with Jacquard-woven fabric and two or three laces, depending on the size of the doll. The skirt is pleated and made with white poplin. It may or may not have a waist sash constructed by loom, and it may or may not have a woolen poncho (quexquémitl).
The product protected by the Protected Geographical Indication is subject to the provisions of the ¨Rules of Use establishing the characteristics and specifications that the product must comply with for its production, elaboration, packaging and commercialization of the Geographical Indication “Muñeca Lele de Santiago Mexquitlán,” which was filed with the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property, along with other official regulations and required standards.
The Otomi community (Hñöhñö) of Santiago Mexquititlán is delimited as the protected geographical area in the declaration of protection, which is in the municipality of Amealco de Bonfil, located in the southern part of the state of Querétaro. It is bordered to the north by the municipalities of San Juan del Río and Huimilpan; to the south by the municipalities of Acambay and Temascalcingo of the State of Mexico; to the east by the municipality of San Juan del Río (Querétaro) and Aculco (State of Mexico); and to the west by the municipality of Epitacio Huerta (Michoacán de Ocampo).
- Muñeca Dönxu de San Ildefonso Tultepec
This Protected Geographical Indication identifies a craftwork consisting of a handmade doll characterized by a dress composed of a long-sleeved blouse with a high collar and embroidery on the chest, and a short skirt finished with lace. It also has a wide skirt extending beyond the feet, which is finished with embroidery using various techniques, and a canvas base also extending beyond the feet, thus supporting the doll so it´s always standing upright.
The Otomi community (Hñöhñö) of San Idelfonso Tultepec is delimited as the protected geographical area in the declaration of protection, which is in the municipality of Amealco de Bonfil, located in the southern part of the State of Querétaro. The municipality is bordered to the north by the municipalities of San Juan del Río and Huimilpan; to the south by the municipalities of Acambay and Temascalcingo of the State of Mexico; to the east by the municipality of San Juan del Río (Querétaro) and Aculco (State of Mexico); and to the west by the municipality of Epitacio Huerta (Michoacán de Ocampo).
